A goblin is a small, ugly creature in children’s stories, fairy tales, and games. Goblins like to trick people, steal things, or make trouble. They are usually not huge monsters; they are more like naughty little spirits. In many books they live in caves, forests, or underground. The word belongs to fiction and games, not to a real animal.

組成From Middle English gobelyn, from Old Northern French gobelin. It may blend an old Dutch word for a goblin (compare Dutch kabouter, German Kobold) and Late Latin cobalus, from Ancient Greek kobalos (“rogue, knave; goblin”). It took the place of native Old English pūca, which lives on in English as puck.
