Give-and-take is what happens when two people or groups do not each insist on winning every point. Each side gives a little and takes a little, so they can live or work together. It can mean the spirit of that — a willingness to meet in the middle — and also the back-and-forth itself, like a lively talk where both people speak and listen. You hear it about friendships, families, teams, and deals. It is everyday English, not a lawyer’s word, for “we both move a bit.” Without give-and-take, one side just takes.
