You can picture a single line of instructions tucked inside every cell — too small to see, but carrying an order like "make this person's eyes brown" or "grow this leaf long and thin." The line was copied from the parents and handed on unchanged, so the same instruction sits in a child's cells that sat in the mother's. That is why gene is used for anything a family seems to pass along without choosing to: the word points at the instruction, not at the trait you can see.
