One way to hold gaming: it is game with -ing on the end, so it names the playing rather than the thing played. Picture someone sitting down to a game with something riding on it. What is riding on it changes from sense to sense — a score and an evening with friends, the money on the table, or a whole set of rules that somebody has decided to play to win.
gaming 可以想成 game 加上 -ing：講的是「玩」這件事，不是那一款遊戲。畫面是一個人坐下來玩一場，而且有東西押在上面。押的是什麼，每個意思不一樣。可能是分數和一個晚上的時間。可能是桌上的錢。也可能是一整套制度——有人決定把規則當成遊戲，照著規則玩到贏。
