A frigate is a , not huge and not tiny, built to move fast and to guard other ships. Its classic job is escort: stay with a group, watch for submarines and attackers, and fight if they come. In the age of sails it was a fast fighting ship with its guns on one main deck, used to scout, chase, and still put up a fight. Navies still use the word, though actually each country draws the line a little differently — one navy’s “frigate” can look a lot like another’s “destroyer.” You meet it in navy news, history, and war stories. It is a technical word, not for fishing boats or ferries.
