Forestry is the skill and the science of looking after large areas of trees — what to plant, what to cut, how to keep the woods healthy, and how to use the wood without emptying the land. It is a subject you can study, and also the name of the work. You meet it in school, in government (a forestry department), and in talk about the environment. It is a serious, slightly official word. Though actually, it is not simply 'trees' or 'a forest': a forest is the place; forestry is what people do with that place. People sometimes stretch it to mean the whole tree business, including selling wood.

組成From Old French foresterie, from forest. English built it beside the older word forester (the person). Middle English seems to have had *forestrie / *forsterie, suggested by the word forster / forester.
