Foreclosure is the name of the legal process — and of the result — when a bank takes and sells a property because the loan has not been paid. If is what the bank does, foreclosure is the noun for that whole unhappy business. News talks about a wave of foreclosures or the house went into foreclosure. It is formal, money-and-law English. In Taiwan people talk about 法拍屋 — houses that have already been through this. Though actually, foreclosure is the legal step; the public sale that follows is the auction. Everyday talk often mixes the two, and that mix is very common.
