    Fore basically means 'front' or 'toward the front', and it mostly survives today in a few set phrases rather than on its own. Sailors say 'fore and aft' for the front and back of a ship. shout 'Fore!' to warn people ahead that a ball is coming their way. And 'to come to the fore' or 'be at the fore' means to become noticeable or important, moving into a leading position.
