Long ago, this was the main ship in a group of navy ships — the one flying the commander's flag, with the commander on board. Today people use it much more often for the best or most important thing a company makes: the 'flagship product' is the one that represents the whole brand, usually their newest and most expensive one (like a flagship phone).
