If you are flabbergasted, you are so surprised — or so shocked — that you almost cannot speak. It is a strong, slightly comic word, more at home in speech and stories than in a formal report. People often say “I was flabbergasted” after news they did not see coming. It is the -ed form of the verb flabbergast; though actually, most people use this adjective far more than they use the verb. It does not mean only a little surprised — it is the big kind.
