A fitter is a person whose job is to put machines or equipment together, install them, or repair them. A gas fitter fits and gas . A pipe fitter works with . A machine fitter builds or services machines. It is a trade name, the sort of word you see in a job , a bit like or . Though actually the same spelling is also how English says more fit: she is fitter than last year means healthier or in better shape. That is a different build of the word. This sense is the job.
