Fission is when something splits into two or more parts. You'll usually meet this word in two ways in science class: nuclear fission, where the center (nucleus) of an atom splits apart and releases a huge amount of energy — this is how nuclear power plants and atomic bombs work; and, in biology, fission is a simple way some living cells or small creatures reproduce, by splitting into two complete new ones.
