In baseball, the first of the four places on the field that a runner has to touch, in order, before scoring a point. It is the one a batter runs to as soon as the ball is hit.
一壘（壘包）
One way to hold first base is as the nearest bag on a baseball field, the one a batter runs to the moment the ball is hit. Getting there means something real: you are safe, you are on the field, you are alive in the play. It also means very little: nobody has scored, and three more places still lie between you and a point. That double feeling of a start that is only a start is what the phrase carries off the field as well.
first base 可以想成棒球場上離本壘最近的那個壘包。球一打出去，打者拼命跑的第一個目標就是它。踩上去，是真的有進度：你安全了，你還在場上。可是它同時也很小：分數一分都還沒進，前面還有三個點要過。這種「有了開頭，但也就只是開頭」的感覺，正是這個詞離開球場以後還帶著走的東西。
