A felony is a serious crime, the kind that can mean a long time in prison — murder is the example people reach for, but the exact list depends on the country and the state. The usual pair is felony (the serious crime) and misdemeanor (a lesser crime). That pair is especially American. Britain used to use felony too, then mostly dropped the old split; Taiwan’s law does not use this English pair at all, though news about US cases will. By the shape of the word it is + -y: the bad act of a . Do not use it for being late, or for a lie to your teacher. Those are not felonies.
