If an idea is far-fetched, it is extremely unlikely to be true or to happen. The picture in the word is of something “fetched from far away” — brought in from such a distance that it does not fit the facts in front of you. People use it for stories, excuses, and plans that ask you to believe too much. It is a little critical: you are saying the idea is stretched. It is not a compliment. And it is not the same as far-reaching, which is about a big effect, not about being hard to believe.
