A faceplate is the outer cover on the front of a machine — the part you look at, and often the part you press or plug things into. On phones, music players, and other it is the plastic or metal front that sits over the working parts; you can sometimes take it off and put another one on. The word also turns up on wall sockets and switches: the square plate around the holes is a faceplate too. It is a technical, slightly formal word. Shop staff and manuals use it more than everyday talk. People stretch it a little: any front panel you can remove and put back may get called a faceplate.
