Extremism is a set of opinions, ideas, or actions — especially in or religion — that most people around that person find too far, unreasonable, even dangerous. It is not “I care a lot.” It is “I will not meet you in the middle, and I may treat people who disagree as enemies.” News uses it for groups that push past what a society will normally accept. Though actually, it is also a fighting word. People sometimes stick it on anyone they dislike, which is looser than the tidy dictionary. The careful meaning is: far from the centre, and most people say that far is not OK.
