One way to picture it: the moment a fire finally goes out — not one flame flickering low, but the whole fire ending, with nothing left to relight.
火完全熄掉的那件事。extinction 是名詞，所以它指的不是「熄掉的狀態」（那是 extinct），而是「熄掉」這整個過程或這個結局——最後一點火沒了，而且沒有火種可以再點。這個字之所以聽起來重，就是因為它裡面藏著「不可逆」：不是變少，是歸零。

From Latin extinctio "a quenching, annihilation", from extinguere "to put out (a fire)" — the noun of the act of putting out.
來自拉丁文 extinctio「熄滅、消滅」，動詞是 extinguere「把火弄熄」，也就是今天 extinguish 的來源。所以 extinction 字面上是「把火弄熄這件事」的名詞形式；現代講物種滅絕，是把一整群生命當成一盞燈來看。
