To exonerate someone is to say, in an official way, that they are not guilty of the thing they were blamed for. A court, a judge, or a report can exonerate a person. It is not the same as forgive. Forgive can still leave a little blame; exonerate takes the blame off — you did not do it, or there is no good proof. The word is formal and legal. You exonerate a person (or their name), not a crime.
