An ewer is a large that people used in the past to hold water, often for washing hands. Before every room had a tap, someone might bring an ewer and a basin to the table or to a bedroom. You will meet the word in museums, history books, and old stories more than in shops today — we would now just say or pitcher. It feels old-fashioned and a little formal. It is a water container, not a cooking pot. Though actually it looks a little like ewe, it has nothing to do with sheep.
