One way to picture 'every': you go down a whole group and touch each member, one at a time, leaving none out — all of them, but seen . From that one move come its other uses: marking a regular gap in time or space (every five minutes, every ten metres), counting in steady steps (every other one), giving as much of something as there possibly is (every chance), and a handful of fixed phrases.
