Sizing something up by eye instead of measuring it exactly — looking at a crowd and saying 'about two thousand', weighing a job and saying 'roughly three days'. A careful, guess about how big, how many, how much — close enough to work with, but knowingly not exact.

From Latin 'aestimare' — to value, to appraise, to set a price on. The modern 'make a reasoned guess at size or amount' grows straight from that act of putting a rough value on something.
