This is the adverb of . You use it when something was done, said, or believed on a wrong idea or a wrong fact. A letter was erroneously sent to the old address. People erroneously assume the two words mean the same thing. The tone is still formal and careful. It means “by mistake / on a false basis”, not “in a wicked way”. Nobody is being evil; the information was just not right.
