A picture, pattern, or writing that has been cut into the flat surface of something hard, like metal, wood, or glass. It can mean the finished picture you can see (there's a lovely engraving of a ship on the wall) or the printed copy made from a cut metal plate (an old book full of engravings). It's also used for the act itself, like having someone's name cut into a ring or a trophy.
