Encirclement is the noun for that surrounding: the act of closing a ring around someone, or the state of being shut in that way. News and history books use it for war — a town or an army caught with enemies on every side. It can also name the situation itself, the ring you cannot easily leave. Though the tidy gloss sounds like a verb (“to surround”), this word does not do the surrounding; encircle does. Encirclement names the surrounding. It feels formal. In daily life people more often say we were surrounded.
