To emulate someone is to do things the way they do them, because you admire them and want to be that good — or nearly that good. It is stronger and more respectful than copy. You emulate a player, a writer, a teacher you look up to. The word is a little formal. Though actually, computer people stretched it: a program can emulate another machine, meaning it behaves as if it were that machine, so old software still runs. Same idea — act like the other thing — but used on tools, not people.
