From the word’s history

From Latin imperator 'commander', from imperare 'to command' (in- + parare 'to order, prepare'). In Rome it first meant a victorious army's commander; an emperor is at root 'the one who commands'.

來自拉丁文 imperator「統帥、發令者」，源自 imperare「下令」（in- 加上 parare「安排、部署」）。在羅馬，這個詞最早指打了勝仗、被軍隊擁戴的統帥；emperor 的根本，就是「那個發號施令的人」。
