When you emend a piece of writing, you take the faults out of the words on the page — a wrong letter, a missing line, a sentence that cannot be right. People who study old books do this a lot: they look at several copies, then they emend the text so readers get a cleaner version. It is a quiet, careful, rather formal word. You would not say you emend a shopping list, and you would not emend a law. Though actually, its cousin amend is the one most people know: you amend a law, or you amend what you just said. Emend stays close to writing, especially writing that scholars look after.
