If a sound is ear-splitting, it is so loud it feels as if it could tear your ears. Nobody’s ear actually splits; people reach for the word when a noise hurts — a scream, a fire alarm, a concert, a right beside you. It is a vivid, slightly informal adjective, more at home in stories and everyday talk than in a lab report, where you might just say “extremely loud”. You will meet it in front of a noun (an ear-splitting shriek) and after the verb be (the noise was ear-splitting). Though actually, speakers only stretch it over sound: a colour or a bright light is never ear-splitting.
