A dupe is the person on the receiving end of the trick. The word says two things at once: this person believed a false thing, and someone else made use of that. It often appears where the dupe did the dishonest work without knowing it, as in signed the papers, carried the parcel, passed on the message. Calling someone a dupe is not kind, but it is not the same as calling them a liar — a dupe was fooled, not in on it. It is a written, slightly newsy word; in speech people would say he got tricked.

Dupe came into English from French duper. The packet traces that back to a Middle French form linked to huppe, the hoopoe, a bird taken to be easily fooled. If that link holds, the word began by naming the one who is fooled, not the one who fools.
