A ducat was a gold coin used in several European countries in the past, for a long stretch of years. Venice made the most famous ones; traders liked them because the gold was trusted. You will see the word in history books, old plays, and stories about money (“not for a thousand ducats”). Nobody pays with ducats now. Though actually, older English sometimes uses “ducats” as a joke word for money in general, the way people also say “gold.” That joke use is old-fashioned too. The same word is also an English surname, once a name for a moneylender or a rich man, from the coin.
