Drenching is drench with -ing on it, and it still means making someone or something extremely wet. As a verb form: the storm was drenching the streets. People also put it in front of a noun: a drenching rain is rain heavy enough to soak you through. And as a thing you can get: we got a drenching means we were soaked. Same strength as drench — wet through, not damp. Teachers and weather reports like the adjective use; the noun use is a little more spoken.
