Think of an arrow pointing at the floor, showing which way something moves or faces. Downwards does not say where it ends up — only the direction of travel: away from the top, towards the bottom. Everything else the word does is that same arrow laid over something that is not a physical space: over numbers, or over the levels of an organization.

可以想成一支指著地板的箭頭，標示的是「往哪個方向」而不是「到哪裡」。downwards 不告訴你終點，只告訴你移動或面朝的方向——離開上面、朝向下面。它其他的用法都是把這支箭頭疊在不是實體空間的東西上：疊在數字上，就是往小的方向調；疊在一個組織的層級上，就是從最上面那個人一路往下數。
