Dorsal means “on the back” — the back of an animal or a fish, and in careful body-science talk, the back side of a human body too. The picture most meet first is a shark’s dorsal fin: the fin that stands up from its back. Doctors and use it as a map word: the dorsal side is the back; the opposite is the belly side (). It is a science and medicine word, not a daily word for the back of a chair, a shirt, or a backpack — there you just say “back.” You will see it in biology class, on animal diagrams, and in medical notes.
