Think of a body going head-first into water. That single picture splits two ways: you can go in and come straight back up — that is the jump off the board — or you can go in and stay down there with air on your back. Both are called diving; the context tells you which.

可以想成「頭朝下進入水裡」這個動作。同一個畫面往兩個方向長：一種是進去了馬上浮上來——從跳板一躍而下，講究姿勢和入水；另一種是進去了就待在下面——背著氧氣瓶在水裡待上半小時看魚看珊瑚。英文兩個都叫 diving，靠上下文分辨。中文反而分得很清楚：一個是跳水，一個是潛水。
