Divination is the claimed gift — or the act — of saying what will happen, or of reading a hidden meaning, from signs: cards, stars, tea leaves, bones, the flight of birds, a feeling in the body. It is both the ability and the doing of it. Though actually, careful talk does not call a weather forecast or a doctor’s guess “divination”; those rest on science. This word keeps a magical, religious, or folk flavour. Some people treat it as real; many others treat it as a story, a rite, or a game. You will see it in history, religion class, and fantasy more than in a lab.
