When people, animals, or things are "dispersed," they have spread out over a wide area, moving away from each other from one starting point. A crowd disperses when people walk away in different directions after an event ends. Police sometimes "disperse a crowd," meaning they make people leave and spread out. Seeds, smoke, seeds, or light can also be dispersed - scattered outward in different directions.
