A discerning person can tell good from ordinary and chooses with care — especially about art, music, food, clothes, design. A discerning reader; a discerning audience. It is a compliment: you notice what other people miss, and your judgment is trusted. Ads are in love with it (‘for the discerning customer’), which though actually often just means ‘for people who will pay more.’ Used honestly, it is about having a good eye, not about being difficult. It is not . is and hard to please. Discerning sees quality. More at home in reviews and careful speech than in playground talk.
