If someone is dilatory, they are slow to do the thing they should do — they put it off, they drag their feet. It is not about walking slowly. It is delay as a habit or a tactic. A dilatory student leaves the essay until midnight. A dilatory office sits on a decision for months. It is a formal, slightly word; ordinary English says slow to act, or they keep putting it off. It looks a little like , and it sounds a little like delay, but it does not come from either. It comes from a Latin verb meaning to put off, to carry a thing apart in time.
