A good way to hold it: the small six-sided cube you throw. Two things follow from that one object — you cannot control what comes up (so dice stands for chance and risk), and it is a tidy little cube (so dicing food means cutting it into small cubes).

dice is the plural of die, which came through Old French de from Latin datum 'something given' — the piece that is 'given' or cast in a game. English later took the plural as a singular, which is why people now say a dice as well as a die.

dice 本來是 die 的複數。die 經由古法語 de 來自拉丁語 datum，字面是「被給出的東西」——遊戲裡被拋出去、交出去的那一個。這個「交出去」的味道其實很貼切：骰子一離手，決定權就不在你了。後來英語把複數 dice 也當單數用，所以今天 a dice 和 a die 都聽得到，日常會話裡 dice 更常見。
