A diarist is someone who a diary. The word is used especially when that diary is later published and other people read it — a famous diarist, a wartime diarist. An ordinary person jotting in a notebook is more often just “someone who keeps a diary.” Diarist sounds a little literary, a little formal. Though actually, some people now use it of blogs and online journals, stretching the old paper-book picture. The -ist ending means the person, never the book itself.
