You can think of destined as a road that has already been laid down in front of someone or something. The walking has not happened yet, but the route is drawn and the end of it is already decided. Sometimes that road runs through a whole life, and the end of it is a career, a meeting, or a failure. Sometimes it is much shorter and much more ordinary: the road is simply the route printed on a ticket or a shipping label, and the end of it is a city. Both uses share one idea — the going is still ahead, but the direction is no longer open.
