One part of a large company, school, government, or hospital, where a group of people work on the same kind of task.

You can think of a department as one slice cut off from a larger whole — a part that has been 'set apart' to handle its own thing. In a big organization that slice is a team with its own job; in a big shop it's an area for one kind of product; stretched , it becomes any 'area' someone is in charge of, or even one slice of a person's character.
