A denomination has two main, very different uses. In religion, a denomination is a named branch or group within a larger faith — Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian are all Christian denominations, each with its own traditions inside the same overall religion. In money, a denomination is the stated value printed on a bill or coin — cash comes 'in denominations of $10, $20, and $50' means those are the different bill sizes available.
