A decathlon is a track-and-field contest in which one athlete does ten different events — running, jumping, throwing — and adds up the points. It is not a team game and not a ten-day festival, even though the name has “ten” in it. The modern Olympic decathlon was coined for the 1912 Games, copying the older (five events). The usual women’s all-round contest is the (seven events), though women have also contested a decathlon. People call a strong all-rounder a “decathlete.” It is not a marathon; a marathon is one long race.
