A dauntless person does not let fear stop them. They keep going. It is a storybook and word more than a kitchen-table one: ships, heroes, house names, and books (the Dauntless in some young-adult stories) love it. In ordinary talk people more often say brave or fearless. Fearless is the everyday cousin; dauntless sounds like a compliment in a formal speech or a line in an adventure. It describes spirit, not a lack of danger — the danger can still be there; the person is not put off by it.
