Picture something held at the top and free at the bottom: a bulb on a wire, a charm on a zip, your legs over the edge of a pier. Nothing is holding the lower end, so the smallest touch or step sets it swinging. That loose, swinging bottom end is what makes dangle different from hang, and every other use of the word keeps it — the thing that swings can be an object, a small ornament, an offer held above someone's reach, or a puck that seems tied to the end of a stick.

The source entry says the origin is uncertain, but likely North Germanic — beside Danish dingle and Swedish dangla, 'to swing about'. If that is right, the swinging was in the word from the start, which fits a word that means more than simply 'hang'.
