A cygnet is a young swan — the baby, not the tall white bird you already picture. Cygnets are smaller and usually grey or brown at first, a little fluffy and awkward on land, swimming in a line behind their parents. It is a rather or countryside word. Plenty of people just say “baby swan.” You will meet cygnet on park signs, in nature notes, and in poems. It is only this: a swan that is still young. It does not mean a pretty little thing in general, and it is not a kind of ring.
