Cutlery is the knives, forks, and spoons you eat with, and the ones you use to serve food. In British English this is the everyday word. In American English people more often say silverware, even when the pieces are not silver. Plates, bowls, and glasses are not cutlery — those are dishes. People sometimes stretch cutlery to mean “whatever sits beside the plate,” but a big kitchen chopping knife is usually just a knife, not cutlery. The word is ordinary in shops, hotels, and homes; it is not slang and not grand.
