Picture a grain of sugar or a under a magnifying glass: flat faces, sharp edges, angles that repeat — a shape nobody cut, which appeared on its own as the substance hardened. Two things stand out, the regular shape and the see-through clearness, and English later borrows the clearness alone to name a kind of glass.
